What is a Balance Transfer?
A balance transfer is a transaction that moves your outstanding debt from one or more credit cards onto a new card, ideally with a lower interest rate.
Why should I do a Balance Transfer?
A balance transfer can be a great strategy to get out of debt especially if your Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is high or you have numerous debts across multiple cards. In addition, you can:
- Pay less interest - By transferring higher-rate debt to a lower-rate card
- Pay off balances faster - Put more of your payment towards principal and get out of debt faster
- Consolidate debt - Simplify your finances by combining multiple bills into one monthly payment.
How do I submit a Balance Transfer?
To submit a transfer, simply follow these steps:
- Select the "Submit Transfer" button on this page
- Enter your NASA Federal card number, date of birth, and last 4 of your Social Security Number
- Click "Select Credit Cards" to view your creditors
Note: You may be asked to authenticate yourself before gaining access - After authentication, you'll see a creditor and corresponding amount. To view more, select "All your cards"
Note: There may be a difference in balance shown and the true balance on your card based on timing - Select the creditor, confirm the amount you'd like to transfer, then select "Pay this Balance"
- Once you confirm, NASA Federal will pay your creditor and the balance will move to your NASA Federal card
- If you do not see a creditor listed, simply select "Click Me!" at the bottom of the form. You'll be asked to enter in the creditor's information and amount to be transferred
Note: If you use this method, it will take longer than 2-3 days to process
That's it! Now you're ready to start transferring balances to your NASA Federal credit card.
When will the Balance Transfer post to my account?
Typically between 2-3 business days but the time frame will ultimately depend on how quickly the creditor processes the transferred amount. As a good rule of thumb, continue to make payments until you know the transferred amount has posted and the balance has been paid off.
Will I earn rewards or cash back on my Balance Transfer?
No, balance transfers are not considered purchases and will not earn rewards or cash back.
*Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is valid only on balance transfers made within 90-days of account opening for qualified applicants, based on creditworthiness and other factors. The 9.9% APR will remain in effect for the life of balances transferred from non-NASA Federal credit cards within the first 90-days of account opening. Balance transfers made after 90-days of account opening do not qualify for the 9.9% APR.
