Mail Theft in Maryland/DC Area on the Rise

January 13, 2021

The Maryland/DC area has recently seen a rise in mail theft. Based on news reports, thieves have stolen nine postal mailbox keys and are using them to steal checks directly from United States Postal Service (USPS) mail drop boxes. The perpetrators alter the checks by changing the payee name or increasing the dollar amount and then cash them.

Authorities are recommending that you neither drop your mail off at an outside USPS mail drop box after the posted collection time nor leave mail in your personal mailbox overnight. You may also avoid using the USPS altogether by enrolling in NASA Federal’s safe and secure paperless BillPay+ through Online Banking.

As always, please report any suspicious activity involving mail delivery to the US Postal Inspection Service by calling 1-800-275-8777. In addition, notify NASA Federal Credit Union at 1-888-NASA-FCU promptly if a check clears for the wrong amount,
