Beware of the Toll Payment Scam: Protect Your Information
February 14, 2025
Scammers are always finding new ways to trick people into handing over their personal and financial information. One of the latest schemes involves fraudulent text messages claiming you owe a toll balance. If you receive a message like this, don't click the link--it's a scam.
How the Toll Payment Scam Works
Victims receive a text message claiming they have an unpaid toll balance. The message contains a fraudulent link directing them to a fake website designed to look like a legitimate toll payment portal.
Once victims enter their credit or debit card information, the fraudsters don't just take the payment. Instead, they may:
- Steal card details to make unauthorized purchases.
- Infiltrate your device with malware.
- Call you pretending to be from your financial institution, attempting to phish for more sensitive information like your PIN, one-time passcodes (OTPs), or online banking credentials.
How to Protect Yourself
NASA Federal Credit Union has multiple security measures in place to help protect members, but staying vigilant is key. Here's how you can safeguard your information:
- Never click on unexpected links in texts or emails. Legitimate toll agencies will not request payments this way.
- Verify toll balances directly by visiting your toll provider's official website or contacting them through a trusted phone number.
- Use NASA Federal's eAlerts & Notifications to track your account activity in real-time. Sign up at nasafcu.com.
- Enable multi-factor authentication on your online banking for extra security.
- Never share your PIN or OTP codes with anyone, even if they claim to be from your bank. NASA Federal will never call or text asking for this information.
- Monitor your accounts regularly and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Your Security Is Our Priority
NASA Federal Credit Union employs multi-layer security to protect your accounts, including fraud monitoring, encrypted transactions, and secure login protocols. Plus, your funds are insured by the NCUA, so your money is safe.
